So they confirmed Overcompensating is set in 2013? I saw some people saying it was supposed to be present day. 2013 makes total sense. I did my college years slightly before that and so many of the references felt like they were taken right out of my own experience 😂.
yes, I believe Benito said it’s set in 2013 when he was actually in college!!! it wouldn’t make sense with the music choices tbh…like that’s why there no brat era Charli. HAHAHA I was slightly after but I still feel so much of the show in my own memories lol
Four seasons: I TOTALLY agree — I hated the twist. To the point where I paused the episode and finished it a day later, I was so annoyed. Very similar to what they did to Derek on Greys!!! Other than that, loved the series.
SLOMW: this seasons was (is?) exhausting!!! I was annoyed anytime any of the husbands were on my screen, and by the end felt the same way about Demi — sorry!!!!
And just like that: there’s something wrong with me too. I actually rewatched season 2 before s3 aired (I’m sick in the head!). I’m just glad Shoe survived the rat poison. 😂
Poker Face: I am caught up, and I am starting to feel that it’s becoming a big trope. It’s becoming expected and almost loses its charm now that she isn’t running from anyone! [SPOILER] The most recent episode was the most emotionally involved she’s been with a victim, so I’m wondering if we’ll get even more depth? Idk. I find myself fast forwarding through it now even though I LOVE the premise and Natasha. I feel like she barely uses her “talents” anymore. We’ll see where this season lands!
I also am watching the new season of nine perfect strangers and I’m not sold, but I felt that way about s1 and watched all of it anyway. Annie Murphy shines, as always. Planning to start Ginny & Georgia today!!
The slow summer rut of tv seems to be creeping in. I’ll check out adults and forever, and honestly I have been sooo intrigued by Found! I need a new wackadoo show that gets cancelled and leaves me hanging so I’ll put it on the list when everything else is done 😂. and cannot wait for the bear!
Whoops, I wrote an essay in your comments! Happy watching 📺
No, because I wanted to close my laptop after the twist in Four Seasons lol I was like...really this is what we are doing here 🙄
SLOMW exhausts me, but I also can't look away. It's insane how much they have to argue about, and there is always something new, too. The husbands can pretty much all be thrown away! Demi was so tiring this season. If she thought she was fan favorite before, she just ruined that.
SHOEEEEE lol the best part of the show. Rewatching s2 is hilarious!!! Tbh I liked the first half and then Aiden showed up.
Agreed about Poker Face. Yes, I watched the most recent episode yesterday and totally think the same things. I actually felt invested in the story and thought it actually took the time to lay everything out, which I don't think we have gotten much of this season. You are right about the "talents" part...it feels like the premise gets muddled a lot this season and leaves me wondering why we are watching and what the show is doing.
You are so brave for sitting through NPS lol... I do love Annie Murphy though. Need her employed in something I feel like watching.
Ginny and Georgia is so tonally jarring lol but a fun watch nonetheless. I am on Episode 2.
Ohh can't wait to hear your thoughts on Forever and Adults. Found is a MESS, but it's MY mess lmao. Definitely a good watch as summer creeps in. Also, praying The Bear returns to being good lol
I agree about Four Season, I found the ending frustrating, which was a shame as I really enjoyed the previous episodes. I have my fingers crossed for season 2 though!
Yes, I was enjoying seeing how their friendships and relationships evolved over the seasons. The "twist," if you even want to call it that, just took me out of it. I literally rolled my eyes 😭 I hope season 2 is more of just character dynamics shifting over the seasons.
You really have a gift in the way you write about TV. So much so that I think I’ll finish Adults!! Also, I completely forgot about the 32-year old in Never Have I Ever lmfaoooooo that was such a CHOICE, especially considering the press he did with the appropriately aged lead actress 😭 but it was also one of those things where I really stopped thinking about it in the show and it didn’t bother me. I loved what you said about the Judy Blume adaptations being earned and giving new life to older stories, such a perfect way to put it. Also… if I start watching Mormon Wives per your rec, will you give Love Island a shot? 👀 just kiddingggg …unless…..
KAIT 😭 that means a lot because all I ever want to do is talk and write about television, so to be told that it resonates in some way is so affirming. There are a lot of incredible voices talking about television, too, so it can be easy to question what you are adding to the mix. But I just try to be authentically me ♥️ Omg, can't wait to hear your thoughts on the rest of Adults. I totally understand if it still doesn't land for you, but I will be interested to see! Yeah, agreed that on the show, it read as less weird and I mostly forgot about it but...was no one age appropriate available soiudfjasiudghsa MESS! Thank you!!! I want these adaptations to mean something, and I am happy her materials have been handled with such care and depth! LISTEN!!! I want to watch Love Island, but the number of episodes scares me. My friend is watching it and said I should give it a try! So I just might!!! 👀 👀
I read that Forever was set in 2018 to avoid having too much cellphone or covid issues. One or the other! I’ve been watched Your Friends & Neighbors in Apple TV and I desperately want it to better utilize Jon Hamm’s comedic chops and be a more fun in the vein of To Catch a Thief, instead of another sad meditation on rich ppl! Enough.
That's great to know and makes a lot of sense. It had to be COVID because they were blocking each other left and right on their cell phones 😭 I wonder how they will deal with the pandemic in future seasons (if they get there). Omg, I don't have Apple TV right now, but it was one I was curious about. Sad to hear that it's more of the same... enough is REAL. Imagine how tired we are lol it's the same rehashed version every time
I think, for me, why the Hacks finale didn't hit was because it felt more like a premiere. I kind of wish they had ended at Deborah saying she wanted to be alone. I would have preferred no closure and wow was that an episode.
I have had Overcompensating on my radar but Mindy's work really hasn't been my jam for her last few shows. Seeing all the hype was giving me flashbacks to the sex lives of college girls hype which was a show i genuinely found irritating and largely unfunny.
My summer is now off to a start with love island back but I'm still very much between shows with everything wrapping up last month. I fear for my sanity in finding something new that isn't just hot people in a villa doing what hot people do.
If I haven't said it before, I love your writing and summaries of tv! I look forward to this post and generally all of yours which all have a great voice and really capture a great perspective on tv! No one watches like I do in my life and wants to talk about it so it's lovely to have found your corner of substack.
yes! something about the pacing of the ending felt off. i would have rather seen the last episode play out as the first few episodes of the fifth season
You hit the nail on the head with the finale feeling more like a premiere. It felt like a weird limbo between the ending and the beginning that didn't quite land in either direction. Something wasn't fully satisfying about it. I like that! It kind of aligns with what I said about wanting to see her period of sadness more! Let us sit with that feeling for a while. It just all felt rushed. I am still excited for S5, though.
I really liked the first season of SLOCG and felt the second was rushed. The third season lost me a bit, and I can see why it wasn't renewed. I understand your critiques, though, and agree that it lost steam as the seasons went on. I think Overcompensating is funnier and sharper, but I would love to hear your thoughts if you watch!
I need to tap into Love Island. I missed the train for that show and the sheer number of episodes scares me lol but I need to give it a try. There was so much in May, and now June is definitely quieter. There's always something that comes along, though.
AHHHHHH thank you so much 🥹. It can be scary to share your thoughts with people and feel like your voice is adding to the conversation, so for even one person to enjoy them means a lot! I have so much fun writing these posts, so I really appreciate that you look forward to them! It truly keeps me going. I am always down to chat about television, so glad to be a space for you to talk about it ❤️

Haha yea when Charlie started singing her old hits I was like "this isn't right" 😂.
LMAOOOO right 😭

OMG, no worries. I wrote one right back 😂
I take back everything I said about poker face after this week’s episode!!!! We’re back, baby
omg I am crawling through AJLT right now, but today's episode is on my list for next!!!!
I’ve got AJLT on now 🤣.
it’s better than the first two episodes imo (the bar isn’t very high)
I agree about Four Season, I found the ending frustrating, which was a shame as I really enjoyed the previous episodes. I have my fingers crossed for season 2 though!

Having a new episode every night is so fun but it is also daunting so I get it lmao
RIGHT...but it's not like I don't watch tv every night anyway so 😂 I will certainly let you know if I tune in

They need to just let Jon Hamm have fun robbing rich ppl!
it could be so simple!!!!

You're so right for the Hacks finale. Episode 9 would have been a pretty great finale honestly. And episode 10 a great opening for next season.
